The Portuguese elected on the 8th of September the 7 Wonders - Beaches of Portugal, an initiative that aims to promote the great values of national identity and promote national beaches, in order to promote their beauty and uniqueness.

The election featured 21 finalists, seven categories and three strategic axes: Environment, Tourism and Water. In the end, the seven were elected by the Portuguese as the most beautiful beaches of Portugal, including two beaches on the Costa Alentejana: Beaches in the category of Rivers, Praia das Furnas in Vila Nova de Milfontes and in the category of Urban Beaches, Beach Zambujeira do Mar, both located in the municipality of Odemira.

The remaining category were chosen by the following:

Beaches in Reservoirs and Lakes - Albufeira do Azibo, Ribeira, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Trás-the-Montes and Alto Douro;

Beaches Arribas - Odeceixe, Aljezur, Algarve;

Beaches Dunes - Porto Santo, Porto Santo, Madeira;

Wild Beaches - Lagoa do Fogo, S. Miguel, Azores;

Beaches of Sports Use - Guincho, Cascais, Lisbon and Setúbal
